Permit Parking Zone introduced outside my house

I live in Sheffield near the town centre and I have never had a problem parking outside my house, however some roads near the town centre do have parking problems and so the council have introduced a residents only permit parking zone.

The problem I have is that they are charging for the permits and it makes it difficult if I want to have guests round. I think this will put people off buying and renting in the area as they are afraid of this additional parking tax as it would have put me off buying my house.

Would anyone be put off buying a house as a result of having to pay to park outside your own home when you could park for free if you lived a further 5 mins from the town centre?

  • well its £40 for the year but how much will it be next year or the year after that? Nobody really knows.

And are you allowed to have more than one car?
It's not unusual for households to have three cars that suddenly becomes £12/month just to park outside your own house!

The problem is that this will be a result of complaint's from other residents regarding them being unable to park outside their properties.

It tends to be those who don't work or aren't working during the normal hours (8 til 5ish). They may find themselves unable to park due to town/city workers using it as free parking. Or sometimes they just get a bee in their bonnet about non-residents parking in their street (some people have nothing better to worry about).

I park 2 miles from where I work just to avoid the £90 a month (average) for the pleasure of working in the stinking city. I've come across residents blocking the road with wheelie bins and even putting down blocks of wood with nails sticking out of them. I park at a time when half of them are at work and the street is almost empty, so I don't see the problem!
The street(s) I park in can never be made "resident only" as it has a number of doctors and dental practices on it.

The council are always more than happy to make streets "resident parking only", as it's a win win situation for them, either in the form of fines or simply from increased revenue from ticket machines!!

I understand your concern regarding your house, I would be asking questions as to whether the value of the property will be affected!!!!!

I live in town with a parking zone in place and it winds me up rotten as shoppers can park without a permit for an hour. So when I come home from work I cannot park and have to use the nearby carpark and pay for the priviledge...which is soooo wrong as I have to pay for my yearly permit. Residents should be able to park in the carpark for free as they have a permit, or shoppers not allowed in residential for an hour...arggghhhhhhh..gets me so cross lol

OP, did you object to the scheme during the consultation period?

We have a residents only parking scheme here, but a permit for the first car per address is free. We can also buy scratch cards for visitor parking.

I fear you may be too late now to change things.
