If we are talking true letter writing etiquette then you should finish with 'Yours faithfully'.

As you've already got one "S" in "sirs" and don't need another in "sincerely".

I remember it as being faithful to someone you don't know (Unnamed) and sincere to someone you do - which I always thought was back to front, but it helps to remind me!

I always start Dear Madam / Sir

I work for a women's charity, and our adverts are for female staff (which is legal in our case), but it surprises me how many people request the job pack with an email saying "dear sir"!

I just sent an email cover letter addressed to Dear Sirs, as the ad didn't give a name and the email address was a series of numbers so didn't give any clues as to who would be reading it.

I always use 'Dear Sirs' I think it's totally generic rather than assuming the sex of the recipient, and 'Yours faithfully' of course.

They should start "Dear Sirs" as mentioned by others, not "Dear Sir".

I once helped a friend of mine compose a letter, she finished it with "Yours faithfully" when it should have been "Yours sincerely". When I questioned her on this she thought yours sincerely was when it was addressed to a man and yours faithfully was when you addressed it to a woman...
