British Gas Electricity warning...

I recommend that anyone on single tarriff electric with British gas check your meter I notice the last few days am using lots more electric, phoned them up to ask why and when they checked they found out their computer had a malfunction and changed my tarriff to a more expensive on all on it own. (yeah right) They are compensating me but thats not the point.

Cause I am on a single tarriff, i.e. there is not a gas supply near where i live anyway there computer the other day automatically assumed that I use night storage heating and changed my tarriff to economy 7 which is a lot more expensive for someone like me who does not have it and boy you you watch the meter eat the money.

(I am on a PAYG meter thats how i noticed that suddenly I was going through so much electric) But there must be other ways to check on a standard meter.

How does someone with a single rate meter get charged a dual rate supply???

If the meter is recording a higher consumption, it is because you are consuming more (or possibly that the meter has developed a fault)

Even if you have a dual rate meter, it's unlikley the resultant cost of E7 would be "a lot more expensive".
Typically the normal rates would be about 10% higher, but the 7 hours of cheap night time about 30 -50% of the normal rate.
It may result a little more expensive depending on your exact usage pattern and exact unit costs, but unlikely to be "a lot more expensive".
