Garden maintenance - how often to get someone in

New home/garden and whilst I'm happy to cut the grass myself, I was thinking about getting a gardener in for the harder stuff - bit of weeding, pruning and hedge trimming - it's probably a generous sized garden for a semi with hedging all round and several large beds but I wouldnt call it huge.
I'm guessing it would take a day a month to keep tidy? but really not sure, how often do people get hedges trimmed etc????
I can't really afford to spend to much on a regular basis, so not sure if just getting someone every few months is better? or if that will cost more because they would need to be there for longer -
thanks for any suggestions.

We have a guy in every fortnight for a couple of hours. Keeps the grass cut, the plants and hedges trimmed, and some weeding.
If you have someone less frequently, and you want your garden to always look nice, I think you'd have to do some of this maintenence work yourself in between visits.0 -
If you are constrained by cost then that is how you decide how many hours a gardener/handyman can do. Any help is better than none so just get him/her to do the heavier stuff. I think that I am making the same general points as mickeypops.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
I'd think a few hours every 2wks would keep it in better order.. regular gardeners rotate the jobs so that over the months all the jobs get sorted... if you just ask how much they charge per hour then agree that you can afford X amount of hours then leave it to the gardener how he organises his time.#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I run a garden maintenance company and would say if you are cutting the grass then just get someone in to cut the hedge and weed 2/3 times a year and then maybe time for weeding.
I would invest in some mulch to reduce your weeding and maintenance costs.0
