What are my admin privileges?

I recently started a new job and due to hot desking we have our own laptop. Obviously I don’t have full administrative privileges to install anything I like but it seems that I can download some things.
I tried to download several video converters but was unable to until I found Prism Video converter and I have also been able to download firefox as a browser. Is there any reason that I might have been allowed to download these over any other programmes from the internet?
If there is no obvious reason to this does anybody know a work around so that I can install some small widgets onto my laptop?

Downloading and installing are two different things.
Being able to download some applications and not others, could be due to company settings on which sites you can/cannot access.
Having downloaded some applications, does not mean that you have correct privileges to install them. Company IT policy may even forbid you from installing any un-approved applications. You need to check IT policy before proceeding.

Feedback from colleagues is that we are able to have anything sensible installed and if it doesn't allow us to download it ourselves we can put in a work request for it to be installed, although as the company who deals with our IT is an external one, it will cost us to have them install it.
So anybody know how I can install some of my widgets?0 -
Hi
Assuming your company is using Windows to manage the network, your user account is managed by a user profile which includes a large set of user permissions / restrictions. Where I work, for example, files can be downloaded but programs cannot be installed. Other restrictions include not being able to change the proxy server settings, the security settings within Internet Explorer, the screensaver is fixed, etc. etc.
If your profile won't let you install programs, I don't know any way to override this without access to the administrator account.0 -
Thanks Mickey. But why was I able to download Prism Video Converter but not any other video converter? They were all downloaded as .exe files so I cannot understand why I could run one .exe but not another0

Have you actually ben able to install Prism, or just download it? It may be that the download was a zip file and so was permitted, whereas an .exe file wouldn't be.0

No Mickey, I tested that before my last post. My thinking was perhaps the laptop is allowing me to install files that are not.exe files but not any .exe files.
Prisim is actually an .exe file for the setup and I have installed (and am using) the programme.
Is this somehow an oversight of my laptop then?0 -

If the software installs itself not system wide but in your user profile where you have full access it might work. There is also software available which runs without installing. Check out portableapps.com.0 -
I think you should delete your current user account and use administrator user account. Then whatever you do,you have the right0

No!
You won't be able to work! You won;t have the admin account login and password details, I'm sure.
Anyway, you would need to have admin rights to delete the user acccount!0 -

Did you even read the first post? It's his work computer and he doesn't have the administrator password.
Secondly, if you had the password he could just login as administrator and install the software and keep working with his user account. That's the preferred and much safer option.0
