What would happen if you closed your account and the cheque bounced? I don't know, I'm sure someone will know

The cheque cant bounce, well not unless Nationwide go out of business, from what I understand from the original post the op got a counter cheque.

You would need to look at the terms and conditions but I believe they will only stop them in case of loss or theft.

You have not necessarily lost your sofas, friend of mine was in exactly the same position with 'The Sofa Company' she had a month of what you are going through now. The administrators were called in and they managed to salvage the company and found a new buyer for it, so it could well happen to you.

And next time, if you buy anthing over £100 for goodness sake pay for it with a credit card where you have section 75 protection.

Dont give up hope altogether and good luck.

make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Today received this letter from manageress of Bilston Nationwide Branch
In response to your letter dated 10th September and our conversation I would just like to put in writing as requested that the Society can only stop a cheque if it has been stolen or lost.
Our corparate cheques are a legal garanteed form of payment.
When I spoke to you and explained how I had spoken to head office to see if there was anything we could do, I advised you to go to the administrator's of the suite company as this was who would have to deal with your purchase.
    regards
    Sarah Wallace (branch manager)

Thank you for your uplifting message but I don't think we will be that lucky someone has already move some of the sofas out of the shop and I am told he the owner owes millions to creditors and suppliers.

can you not empty your a/c .... cheque will not have funds in a/c to cover it .... then when it comes back refer to drawer ... you can do something then as you didn't receive any goods so the contract is null and void?

can't see them having much success in sueing you for a bounced cheque that didn't actually form part of a contract to supply goods....any legal heads in here at the mo?

It is a building society cheque, so it is drawn on Nationwide's account. Money is transferred from your account to Nationwide's account as soon as the cheque is issued.
  • Could you not go into another branch and say that you lost the cheque ??
If they are not going to put a stop on it when it has not been cashed yet.
  • I tried going to another branch and I said it was lost in the post but they could not stop it as it had put a block on the cheque so they could not cancel the cheque
