What to buy now...

I'm luckily coming into a bit of cash (house sale) so was thinking about an upgrade to my desktop. Recently made a couple of improvements (new HDD and processor E6420) and reinstalled xp and she's running quite nicely - apart from my motherboard is old and limiting what graphics I can put in. Kinda loathe to change the cpu again but it was from ebay so I should get back what I paid. Have a few options (prices approx form Ebuyer)

1) New Socket 775 mobo and graphics (say HD 5770) about £130

2) New core i3/5, mobo and graphics - about £250-£275

3) Just get a new gaming PC for about £600- £700

4) Wait till Xmas and see what's about in the option 3 bracket

I'm kinda bordering between 1 and 3 at the moment, just wondering how the older processor and chipset is likely to limit me - plus if there's another option? Have got a bit more money, but also want some new wheels for my bike and the missus wants a new cooker out of all this. Bioshock and Oblivion should keep me going till Christmas (I'm working through older classics at the mo) so not desperate but would appreciate any thoughts

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
its always a hard choice especially as in 6 months time there will be something new around to bring down prices etc etc.

one thing i was thinking is the new graphics card option is what PSU do you have? and do you have the correct power output for a new GPU.

also i personally think you would be wasting money on a new socket 775 mobo, its just dead tech, so wondering how your current mobo is limiting your GPU choice, doenst it have a PCI-E slot?

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Got a 500W PSU - mobo is a 775dual vsta. It's got a 16x slot running at 4x electrically. Socket 1156 look upgradeable for a few years yet??

  • After this upgrade, I'm highly recommend upgrading to an SSD hard drive, I've just done it with my laptop and everything loads at least three times faster now, boots up nice and quick too.
