At the price range you are looking at, condition is more important than make, model, age or mileage. Unfortunately this just makes it harder for you to find the right car.

As a general rule, people say that 2nd hand Golfs are a good buy, but if you get one that's been abused and neglected, then it's not a good buy.

Are you sure you can't find anyone to help you out here, nobody in work, maybe throw in a case of beer/a cake/some wine etc. for their trouble?

You may also want to consider going cheaper and saving the rest to fix anything that crops up. Price isn't always an indicator of quality. One of the best old bangers I've ever had was a £100 Volvo 460 that I got 2 years out of with virtually no issues*.

*it failed the first MOT on a rear seatbelt. Solved by removing the rear seat and calling it a 2 seater.

Good point actually, I wonder how many VW Golf's get abused because people think they don't need looking after at all????

Most of them, which is silly really as they're some of the cars on the road that need constant care and attention. Modern Golfs really aren't all that.......

Old French diesel should see 'ya right. 306, 406 both very good cars, very cheap to run and plentiful.

Hope you get your fixed but if not I've found Mk1 and 2 Ford Mondeos go on and on and on and on. Had many in our family and they have proven cheap to buy, reasonable to run, and easy and cheap to get parts for. Also echo that condition is more important than make model when looking at the sub £1,000 market.
