Help! statute barred?

Hi,
hoping someone here can help me. I got a letter a couple of weeks ago from a debt company asking me to pay £220.21. It was my first letter from them and didnt say what the debt was for. I consolidated all my debt about 3 years ago so honestly couldnt think what it was for. I text them for a call back and never heard anything so assumed it must have been a mistake. Yesterday I recieved another letter - a failure to respond to previous correspondance. I text for a call back again and received a phone call this morning. Basically its for a mobile phone from Singlepoint in 2003. They couldnt give me any proof and suggested I contact the police for a crime ref number if I didnt make the contract. They said the last repayment I made was in January 2004. I havent heard anything since 2004 and honestly cant remember the details or if I paid it off. What should I do? They said they would take a onetime payment of £150 to clear the account but I'm a single mum and don't have the money. Should I go down the route of a letter asking for proof or a letter stating that the debt would now be statue barred. Please help!

  • Yes I would think that as 6 years have passed, the debt (if there even is one) is now not recoverable. Certainly write them a letter denying all knowledge of the debt and demand proof that the money is owed.

  • thanks, I didnt find that when I was searching earlier. Just when I thought I was on top of my debt this happens. I will try sending a letter with the template to see what they say. I didnt know whether I should ask them for written proof of the debt or say straight off that it should be statute barred. I was a little suspicious that they were willing to take off all the charges straight away if I made payment, usually I think theres a bit of a dispute before debt recovery companies reduce the amount.
