Setting Up home network

Hi

I am trying to set up a network at home.

My setup is pc (windows XP) connected to wireless router modem by ethernet cable. Laptop (also windows XP) with wireless card which connects through to internet via the wireless router. This all works fine, good signal strength etc.

I have then gone through setting up network via windows and sharing folders and printers etc. I can access the laptops documents etc from the pc but not the other way round. From the laptop I can't even see the pc on the network!

Any ideas what I am doing wrong???

  • Make sure you can ping from the laptop to the PC by IP address. You will be able to ping the other way.

Start with this and report back, it goes different ways according to whether you can ping.

  • Once you have established you can ping from each machine, have a look at this MS tech article, it might be of some use to you

  • WORKGROUP or MSHOME ?? All machines need to be in the same "Workgroup"
  • The network on the laptop shows as MSHOME, with just the laptop showing attached to it.

Sorry but how do you obtain the IP addresses and ping each other!!
  • Right I have managed to find all ip addresses and I can ping the pc from the laptop. Any further advice please??

Go with the article in #3. And make sure that both machines are in the same workgroup.

  • Thanks for all your advice. Read and tried to take in the article about sharing. I think it might be the firewall on my router not allowing incoming connections. It is a Netgear DGN2000 if any one knows what rulles I should have!!

You need to look at your router manual to find out if it is doing anything. Possibly it is set up to prevent the wireless accessing the local network, except that you can now ping both ways. You could try running the laptop wired and see whether networking will work
