Unauthorised direct debit on account

I just logged into my HSBC current account to do my daily check.

Looked at the Standing Order and Direct Debits. Two new ones have appeared, one is a standing order to my new letting agents/landlord which I authorised. The other is a direct debit to "PET INSURANCE".

I have no pet insurance and have nothing to do with a company in this name.

I've already cancelled the direct debit online - do I need to let my bank know about this?

Seems a coincidence that it appeared a few days after I provided my letting agents with a bank statement as proof of address ...

  • If you have cancelled the DD then just keep an eye on the account in case it comes back.
If it does, keep cancelling it and tell your bank who may be able to tell you who is behind it.

I would report it to your bank anyway - it's the sort of thing that they should be aware of.

Additionally, if there are any problems later down the line, they'll have a record of you raising it straight away.

Thanks for the replies. I sent a message through internet banking this morning. They replied saying that the DD is already cancelled. Anyway, I've told them that I didn't authorise it and I have a record of this for any problems later on.

If I get anything else appearing, I'll be straight on the phone to them.

Had another one appear today: H3G. I reckon this is probably short for Hutchinson 3G, i.e. 3 mobile.

I've got nothing to do with them so I'll be onto HSBC as soon as I can.
  • Is it worth asking for a new account number? They might be able to. A slightly different situation I admit, but I had a lot of dodgy transactions on my Credit Card and they insisted on cancelling it and issuing a new one.

A new account number would mean closing the existing account and opening a new one.

The OP would have to inform his employer, and transfer across all his direct debits and standing orders.

Not worth the hassle in my opinion, just keep an eye on the situation and be ready to claim back any payments that are taken.

Credit/debit card fraud is different, as you can link different PANs (16 digit card numbers) to one account, but as direct debits are set up using the sort code and account number you would have to start from scratch.
