Is it a cutch or gearbox problem?

Was driving my mum's 1999 Toyota Corolla yesterday and noticed it sometimes doesn't go into 3rd as easily as it should (though it does always go in with a shoogle). This only happens now and again, not a constant problem.
Now, I'm not a whizz with cars so I need someone to tell me if this indicates a clutch or gearbox problem please and what the best way to proceed is (in a low-cost type way).

Generally if the car goes into first or reverse easily, but has problems selecting other gears, it is not a clutch problem. Have it checked over by your friendly local independent though, as it could just be a simple linkage problem, not a gearbox fault.0

Could also be a syncromesh problem within the gearbox due to old age.
I'd a car did similar and i got the gearbox oil replaced and added 'Slick 50'. Worked wonders.0 -
