Same as the tosh that's spouted about immigrants - its ok for us to move to France, Australia etc but not for others to move here. Couldn't have anything to do with colour could it????[/QUOTE]
Sorry moomin mama I don't get it , I am under the impression that most of the Migrant workers coming here at present are coming under the new EU rules , they are Europeans so what has that go to do with 'colour'.#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

True - at the moment. I was just referring to the fact that plenty of legal migration goes on. We go to other countries but don't like anyone coming here. Because those of a different colour are more visible the media get all het up about it and assume that all immigrants of colour are asylum seekers or illegal. Just thinking ahead to when Romania maybe joins the EU. In general they will be more instantly 'visible' than the Poles. The only reason the Poles are noticed is their numbers and the fact they have their own shops, communities etc. Getting a bit ahead of myself really and writing before thinking properly (nothing unusual).*Never poke mad people with a pointy stick*0 -

Very pleasant people and boy do they graft. However, it's far from a level playing field - very few seem to be planning on being here long-term. As a freelancer I can understand the boost in productivity compared to somebody who may be in it for the longer-term, but are we going to see an increase in 'hard core' unemployed as it becomes increasingly difficult to live on minimum wage? I suspect employers will continue to prefer a rolling turnover of relatively cheap grafters.0 -
I think there are many many Brits who have no objection to any immigrants coming to this country and many who see it a a positive plus for us.. as you say much of it is media hype ..... But we have and hopefully always will, have a welcome in the Hillside for anyone who wants to come here and do an honest days work for an honest days pay . Most people who complain about immigrants forget we absolutely have a debt to pay to many peoples around the world for the way that we treated them and their countries while we were building our Empire....
ManAtHome reading her post , that obviously was not what moominmama meant by her 'colour' reference...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Broker wrote:I feel for home grown local workers who must be agrieved. If the companies that employ them are British then the company has to review their employment policy. Afterall they are in that local community and should help it equally as well.
The problem seems to be in sectors that take a lot of immigrant labour that the new workers are not unionised and don't get the union-agreed rates of pay.
The point is not that low-paid workers are taking "British" jobs, but that all workers, regardless of nationality, should be entitled to the same rates of pay and union recognition. Then everyone would be competing fairly for these jobs - problem solved.0 -

So do you believe in uncontrolled immigration, or only when it doesn't affect you & your family ??
Why have any restriction on migrants from Bulgaria/Romania when they enter EU.
The goverment estimated 20,000 Polish migrants & more than half a million have come.
The government have again made some low estimate on numbers from Bulgaria/Romania
which is no doubt completely ridiculous, because the government hasn't got a clue.
Even if goverment tries to impose some controls, the migrants can just come as tourists
& disappear into blackmarket shadow economy.

But we can't just move to France, Australia etc and live there can we? In France you have to prove that you can support yourself and any family you have. It is very very difficult to get a job there even if you speak fluent French because they always employ their own first (and why not?). I am pretty sure countries like Portugal and Italy have the same restrictions. You are not entitled to any benefits even after a year or more and you have to pay for healthcare. To go to countries such as Australia you need a visa and if you very lucky you will get one for a year and no longer. Often they are only for 6 monthsThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Let's be quite frank here. Survey after survey is showing that most Brits are actually shunning the jobs that these immigrants are taking.
I say that we should be very pleased that this slack is being taken up and that we can in some small way make it up to Poland, Czech etc for leaving them mired in dictatorship for 50 years.
If you don't want to find yourself in competition with these workers for the lower-paid jobs, then you damn well work harder at school and get yourself qualified. I've SEEN what happens in schools with the total lack of respect for learning and the 'to hell with education - I'm bound to get a job anyway' syndrome.
If you don't want to find yourself competing vainly with the local Polish plumber, stop charging ridiculous rates and call-out charges and maybe we'll hire you.
Sometimes I think the Aussies are spot on about the whingeing hereabouts.0 -

peter 999 thanks for calling me stupid it wasn't really necessary , and I am sure that my family are affected by the influx of foreign workers the same as everyone elses is , why would they not be? I just do not blame them for wanting to come here to better their standard of living and earn more money after all its what many people want is it not?#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

My 2p's worth, I employ one polish worker and he is superb, and pay him the same as my other staff, booth also very good, one old one young female.
But I interviewed 20 people recently for two jobs, and the two that shone out where the pole and the older worker, I couldn't count how many wastes of spaces 20 something’s came just to tick a box at the job centre.
So I will continue to employ the best person for the job, be the old, polish or what ever.
A business in front of my can't find any locals at all and has all poles, and paying them well above minimum wage the same rate that he would pay locals, but they don't want to work long hours in a bakery for 6.50 pound per hour when they can sit on their backside....
Long my immigration and emigration continue
