Help Needed With Installing Drivers on Dell Vostro 1000

OK so my Dell Vostro 1000 which I have had for a few years - due to lots of installs and uninstalls and a big virus I have decided to wipe it and reinstal windows Xp Pro.

First time I did it it was fine but i had problems loading the drivers. I installed all of them but the Wireless card was missing from every where including Device manager etc. I was then told they had to be installed in a certain order.

So i wiped it again and started from fresh and used this guide (Manually Reinstall Your Windows XP Operating System | Dell) (Step 5) for the correc torder to install the drivers.

So i inserted the Drivers and Utilities disc and the list that came up was the following. (Drivers with * next to them has a tick on the install prgram): -
Applications
Dell QuickSet Rev:A45

Audio Drivers
SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Rev: A08

Chip Set Drivers
ATI SMBus / Chipset Driver Rev: A00 *
Ricoh R5C832 Rev: A00 *

Communication Applications
Conexant D330, HDA, MDC, v.92, Modem Rev: A01

Communication Drivers
Conexant D330, HDA, MDC, v.92, Modem Rev: A02

CPU Drivers
AMD Processor Driver Rev: A01

Diagnostic Diagnostics Utility
Dell 32-bit Diagnostic for Resource CD (graphical user interface)

Input Drivers
Dell Touchpad / Pointing Stick Rev: A00

Network Diagnostics Utility
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Rev:A02

Network Drives
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Rev:A03 *
Dell_Wireless (except US, Japan) WLAN Card Rev: A14
Dell_Wireless (Japan) WLAN Card Rev: A14
Dell_Wireless (US) WLAN Card Rev: A14

Operating System Utilities
Dell OS Tools Rev: A05

System Utilities
Dell Notebook System Software Rev: A25

Video Drives
ATI IGP Xpress 1150 Rev: A06

So according to to the Dell order of install I did the following: -

For 'Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS)' I installed: -

System Utilities
Dell Notebook System Software Rev: A25

The for Chipset I installed (Should I have installed both?!): -

Chip Set Drivers
ATI SMBus / Chipset Driver Rev: A00 *
Ricoh R5C832 Rev: A00 *

Then for 'Video Adapter' I installed: -

Video Drives
ATI IGP Xpress 1150 Rev: A06

But before it could install the following error comes up: -

Severe
The display driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed in your system.

What do I do and what am I doing wrong?
I still can't see any mention of a Dell Wireless WLN card. How would i know if it was broken and not responding?

Do I need to install all of the drivers and what order should I do it?

Thanks for any help.

Doesn't it have a factory restore partition?

    press these at bootup.

Dell XP - CTRL+F11/Dell PC Restore by Symantec/restore

    Dell/ vista - F8/advanced boot options/repair/dell factory restore image

    I'd assume not as....

The only thing you can try is to hook it up using a ethernet cable and running Windows Update so see if it finds the remaining details.

I can't be 100% sure but I don't think XP is supported by Microsoft anymore. Why don't you invest in Windows 7?

FYI Its supported until April 2014 for the moment, further extensions beyond that still possible.

Investing in windows7 is a valid suggestion but check your PC specs first... -and be sure to get a RETAIL version (ie transferrable/able to be sold on, yours forever) and avoid OEM at all costs (non-transferrable, gets thrown out with your PC when it breaks and you need to buy another one)
  • I went to Dell support and entered laptop vostro 1000 and ended up with this page with all required drivers for Windows XP.

The video driver importance says "optional", which to my way of thinking means that XP can support the graphics adapter by itself.

It also says "Applies to IGP Xpress 1150". This may mean that only some vostro 1000s have this type of adapter, and, maybe your laptop does not.

So try not installing the video driver and see if xp can support it on its own.
