random question to do with student finance : parents supporting application

Options
hi there,
a very random question im afraid , but wondered if any nice people would happen to know the answer or if it is quite common before i speak to the finance people tomorrow .

My parents have been supporting my university applications every year. However this year they have done it late due to other personel issues. We are now trying to do this so i get some finance later in the year. However for some reason they are not linked to myself on the student finance website, so cannot support my application. They have had no problem doing this for the last two years, and were sent all the relevant information so we are slightly unsure why it has happened, and whether it may be just me making a mistake?

thankyou for any responses x

what happens when they log on and try to link to you? the website is a joke. We are supporting our two daughters and suddenly our daughter who is a 2nd year just disappeared!! I tried to link again with her and it says she already is linked to two supporters.
Nothing with student finance surprises me anymore

  • Im glad its not just us! When they log in , it goes to the main page of their account, but when they try to support an application they say there is no one linked to them and they have nothing to support! Guess I will have to ring them today....they are just so incompetent that I feel im going to be hitting my head against a brick wall!
  • I had the exact same problem. Last year being my first year I got them to apply using paper forms, so this year to save time I got them to apply online but they couldn't be linked to me. I know my mom eventually sorted it after several phone calls but from what I remember she and my dad had to email someone at SF to get them to link their accounts with mine. I wasn't allowed to do this for them as they have to have emails from the parents due to the data protection act. (which is bloody annoying when it's MY money!)

From what I could also tell the problem wasn't actually related to the fact they did paper copies for me last year, but to the fact the computer system was showing they were still linked to my brother who graduated the year before I started.

  • Student Finance query - Can someone please tell me the rules for a parent supporting a student finance application. I am getting conflicting messages whenever I call student finance. I have been told firstly that for this academic year it is based on the household taxable income 2009-2010 but have also been told that is based on the household income in the year the student is at university i.e. I have provided my tax returns for 2009-2010 and they have asked my husband to provide details of his income - but we weren't married or living together during that period. My daughter is in her second year and this makes a considerable difference to the amount she receives as I married in Sept 2010. Help

Generally for this academic year (11/12) Student Finance would look at income for the tax year 9/10.

However because your circumstances have changed(married) they may want you do do a current year assessment to reflect on your revised circumstances.

There is a part in the declaration section on the application
stating that you will tell them immediately if your circumstances change.Which suggests to me that you could be assessed on current year.

I am not sure on the regulations regarding income assessments following marriage though, hopefilly Taiko will clarify.

His income, even though you were not living together, is required for the assessment. It goes on household income for those who will be there for the academic year, but is based on a prior tax year's income.
