Too many slats in kitchen blinds

Does anyone know if you can remove the slats in blinds as my kitchen blinds when fully down could cover a window twice the height. Please find images attached.

I don't want to start taking the blinds down if it can't be done and make things even worse.

Thanks for any help.

  • Yes, you should be able to. I think you take those little knobs off the end, take the thick piece off, remove as many slats as you need and put the thick piece back on. Then you can cut the excess string off, tie it in a knot and push the knobs back in. At least, that's how I did it years ago.

You don't have to take the blind down it can be done in situ... you usually get instructions for doing it with the blinds... I've done all the ones in my house...

This video shows exactly how its done...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guEVgpcEitM

Yes you can remove some of the slats without taking the blind down, you just have to be patient and take your time.
You see the wee button like bits on the bottom heavy bit of the blind? they prise off and underneath you will find a hole and inside that you will see that the cords running up the inside of the slats of the blind have a knot in them. Undo the knot and the bottom heavy part of the blind will come off. Then all you need to do is un thread each slat and slide it to one side to remove it until you reach the length you want, trim off the excess side threads that run down the OUTSIDE of the slats NOT the main ones that were knotted. Re thread the main cords through the heavy bottom part, knot it well then trim off the excess leaving a few inches which can be tucked inside the hole and put the plug back in.
    That's what I did with mine/
    Hope this helps:D

  • Thanks everyone. Bit late now but I'll be starting removal tomorrow.
  • I did a 6ft. wooden blind 8 weeks ago and I found that with use and the general weightiness of it, I guess the cords have stretched a little and I'm planning to take out 2 more slats soon. Best to take out too few slats now and make another reduction later.
  • Hi

Good idea to keep some (or all) spare slats - not only in case of any damage but for anyone who does a bit of DIY, these slats make excellent packing pieces. Especially ideal if you need to pack out door hinges etc.

  • Leave them up when you do it, it makes life so much easier.

I've done it a number of times of blinds of that design, it is quite straightforward.

Don't cut the cords until you are very sure you have it all correct, and definately leave a couple of inches of spare cord after the knot.

Make sure your knots are tied such that the blind sits level, it's unlikely you'll get it right first time! I know I didn't.

  • Job done. Went great as far as I can see. Just watched a YouTube video and went through the steps. Had to remove 20 slats. Alot more light getting through the window now lol
