I asked for citric acid in Boots the other day and was told that they don't stock it any more; my local chemist doesn't either, so off to try nearest Asian shop.0

I followed the usual Avent instructions for descaling and it came up fine. The kitchen was a bit whiffy for a few minutes but is fine now. I guess the brown stuff might cause discolouring over time so I'll still get some white vinegar tomorrow. Incidentally I have real trouble sourcing white vinegar locally - our local Sainsburies only stocks the organic type - I'm all for using organic but that's taking it a bit far LOL!
Given it was a bit stinky, I take it you actually turned the steriliser on with the vinegar in it? Just to say that the avent instructions I found and quoted in my previous post only say to do it cold with vinegar, guessing for the reason abs mentioned in his post further up ie acetic acid being stronger than citric.0 -
Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0

In true MSE old style, I'm going to stick with the white vinegar/cold water method of descaling - always got that in my cupboard. But thanks for all the replies.

I did find some on a website though...

Citric acid is what drug users use to stabilise heroin with water before they inject.Shops are not supposed to aid drug taking,so a lot of them stopped selling it.0
