Citric acid alternative?

I've got an avent steam steriliser that needs cleaning once a month using citric acid. The supply that came with it has now run out.

Anyone know a) where I can get hold of more or b) whether there is a suitable alternative.... I'm thinking white vinegar possibly ;)

Cheers.

  • Citric acid should be available at any large chemists shop. Try your Boots next time you are in?

  • Asian supermarkets also sell citric acid.

Or you can get it online

  • I'm in the same situation and was thinking of trying white vinegar. Am going shopping tomorrow and will try it then - will let you know how I get on.
  • be careful....

vinegar is acetic acid as you probably know and it is more potent than citric acid. you dont want it attacking any metals you have. id say stick with citric acid being a chemist. :)

you should be able to pick this up in loads of places, try supermarkets (asian and tesco's etc) maybe wilkinson somewhere like that do it too?

A friend of mine had real problems trying to get citric acid a while ago. She wanted some to make Turkish delight but apparantely a lot of places aren't allowed to sell it, something to do with drug addicts!
I did find some on a website though...

  • why not jut use lemon juice? have to use the bottled stuff obviously as you dont want bits in it!

  • Just to say that I have subsequently found this on the avent website -

Pour 100ml vinegar mixed with 200ml cold water into steriliser. Allow to stand in the unit until any limescale has dissolved. Empty the unit and rinse thoroughly.

So there we have it straight from the horse's mouth :D
  • Too impatient to wait until tomorrow to buy white vinegar so I tried it with the ordinary brown stuff diluted 50:50 with water. I followed the usual Avent instructions for descaling and it came up fine. The kitchen was a bit whiffy for a few minutes but is fine now. I guess the brown stuff might cause discolouring over time so I'll still get some white vinegar tomorrow. Incidentally I have real trouble sourcing white vinegar locally - our local Sainsburies only stocks the organic type - I'm all for using organic but that's taking it a bit far LOL!

you can buy little tubs of citric acid in wilkinsons, for about 79p. they sell it for wine/beer making purposes.
  • I had this problem too, i asked a few local chemists and they all just looked at me as this is what drug users use, i then went to mothercare and bought the proper stuff there
