Insurance for driving a private car in US

I make extended trips to the USA (a month at a time) and friends are now offering to lend me their spare cars rather than see me go on paying rental prices. But I don't know how to get insurance for driving a private vehicle over there. Anyone have experience of this? I tried the AA but they said I'd have to take out insurance locally when I get there. I have an annual CDW/SLI policy for rental cars but obviously that doesn't cover me in this case.

If, as I suspect, the position in the US is similar to that in Canada, it is the norm for private motor policies to be on an "any driver" basis, so that provided your friends carry insurance on the vehicles concerned, you should be covered to drive them. Of course, you would need to satisfy yourself that this is the case, but I have never had any problem driving friends' vehicles in Canada on this basis.
