Crikey, some people really have no idea about the margins added by various parts of a retail supply chain. Adding just 10% to the price of a stamp, you have to sell an awful lot of stamps to cover the overheads of running a shop.0

4 whole pence....!!!! me he'll be dining out for a month on that little earner!!!!!!!
other ways to look at it....
You could always have walked the extra 200 yards [or whatever] to save the 4p........... [but you didn't].
Staff costs are about £8 an hour so if the assistant took longer than 20 secs to serve you the retailer has lost money on the sale.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why then you're as thick and stupid as the moderators on here - MSE ForumTeam0 -
AFAIK the whole point of selling stamps at cost is to make money on the non loss leader stuff

As a former newsagent I can tell you the mark up on a stamp is 5%.There are no restrictions on what price you can sell them at.It is a convenience thing.Something to get the customer through the door rather than a money spinner0

what many of the posters here may not realise is that when retailers purchase stamps from Royal Mail Retail for onward selling, they are sold to the retailer at a DISCOUNTED price
so there should not need to be any mark up to cover costs - the retailer is getting the stamps cheaper than face value to begin with
so rather naughty of the retailer in this instance0 -

That's true, but this newsagent concerned may not be a RM reseller, and may just be buying the odd book of stamps from their local post office.
Depending on the amount of stamps they sell, they may not want to buy in bulk from RM for stock that may take weeks or months to sell.
Another thing is that the RM retailer price list only gives prices for books of stamps (either 6 or 12), and maybe the newsagent does charge the correct amount when reselling these.0 -

I believe that he has to gain permission from her majesty if he charges more.
Postal orders are different and gained neccessary approvals before they were sold for more than their worth. Stamps just like £5 notes have had no such approvals.
In fact you could argue that money/stamps being undervalued or overvalued will have a large impact on a countries AAA credit rating. This is why companies cannot just make it up as they go along.
Rules for 'collectors' items are different of course but he did not sell you a collectors stamp but a one which was to be used.
you realise that the OP has now bought the stamps and the thread was old until you resurrected it0
