Anyone help me with Orange customer services?

Hoping somebody can advise me about a problem with an Orange mobile!
My daughter has a PAYG Orange phone (an Orange handset on the Orange network). We bought it in June and now we are unable to access text messages.
I took the phone to a local Orange store on two occasions and was given some advice, none of which made any difference to the problem. The shop assistant said that because we have had the phone longer than 28 days they can't help in store - I have to contact Orange Customer Services (which I know from previous experience is not good).
So I emailed Orange and they say that they need to run diagnostics and I have to phone them either from the mobile (thus using up a large chunk of my dd's credit) or from my landline (I think it's about 20 p a minute!).
So ... what I'm wondering is - are they right to say that they can't help me in store? Or as Orange's face on the High Street should they take some responsibility? I resent having to make expensive phone calls in order to deal with their faulty product.

Are not calls to Orange CS free via the mobile?0

I believe that you can access the automated elements of their phone system for free, but when they actually transfer you to an operator they begin to charge you.
OP - could you not ask them to call you, giving them times which would be convenient? Not sure if that would work, but it's worth a try.0 -

Thanks for the replies. I used LeeSouthEast's 0800 number and called Orange CS. The first time I was holding for 20 minutes so I gave up! This afternoon I got through eventually to an adviser. Unfortunately, he either wasn't listening to or did not understand what I was saying and so whatever he did that was supposed to help didn't! Anyway, I've since emailed them and asked them to phone me so that I don't waste any more time/money.0
