expensive vaccinations

Just been to see the nurse for vaccinations to visit S America. Hepatitus B £30, Yellow Fever £50, Rabies £145.

Anyone got suggestions on how to get these any cheaper??

  • Hi Hon,

Those prices aren't too bad to be honest but you could try googling private travel health clinics in your area and see what they charge but I would be surprised if you got them any cheaper :0)

That seems really cheap to me i was quoted more than double that by my surgery. Ring around a few Drs surgeries and enquire about how much they charge, pretend you're already registered with them. When i asked my nurse she told me that another surgery a few streets away didn't charge for hep B and the yellow fever was cheaper there too. I'm considering moving practices for the saving.
  • I paid £95 for my rabbies jabs but I'm in Northern Ireland, don't know of that makes a difference.
  • You can get Hep B for free if you're a health care worker. Yellow fever I got for 35 pounds but that was a few years ago now. Have a good read about the rabies vaccine before deciding whether to get it. It doesn't stop you getting rabies, just makes it a little easier to treat. If you are unlikely to get bitten by a rabid animal (ie , how long are you going for, are you just doing touristy things, etc) then you might wish to leave it.

you could phone around but those seem pretty reasonable prices to me. We charge around the same for yellow fever. Check when you phone for extra charges. Travel clinics and other GP may also charge a consultation fee, and some make a charge per injection for it to be administered.

2 or 3 jabs? £145 is round about what I paid for 3 jabs.

I had the same recently and the prices quoted by the OP are around what I paid - and that was after checking several cities to see where was cheapest
  • I've just had Hep A. and polio/tetanus/diptherium jabs in NI, and they were free!! Both prescribed by doctor (free prescriptions here) and administered by the duty nurse.
  • we had jabs for Turkey...free at our GP surgery

DS is going to Niger in December. He had the Hep A, Hep B and Typhoid jabs free at our GP. We have to pay for yellow fever elsewhere - not sure how much, sorry.

But none of them were the jabs the OP had.
