Netbook Needed

I'm after a netbook for keeping my revision etc on and writing papers when I am out and about. I currently have a Toshiba laptop and get on very well with it. I've noticed two current Tosiba netbooks, but I don't really understand too much about how computers work and wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction of a good quality, must have a long life battery of up to 10 hours netbook please.

There are many Netbooks that could do what you want so the first question is:

How much do you want to spend?

Edit: You can check out Samsung's range of Netbooks at:

    www.sammynetbook.com

Also, check the Argos Ebay Clearance site. The netbooks are towards the bottom of the page.

IMO with a netbook your main concern is the battery. The longer it lasts the better. Also the price, I'd suggest if you're nearing the 300 pound mark you should really stick with your laptop. I recently bought a Samsung n220 for £210 ex-display from Frasers. Not sure what they go for boxed.
  • I see what you mean. I'm struggling to find a cheaper netbook with a decent battery size. If anyone else knows of a reputable one, I'd love to know about it.

    How much cheaper?

If you are looking at 10+ hrs on the battery then you will be looking at a 9 cell battery.

I use a Samsung NC10 with 6 cell battery and get between 5-7hrs depending what I'm doing with it.

I get around 11-12hrs but am sure mines only a 6 cell, though some of the settings are lowered.

    Sure it's a 6 cell?

Samsung NC10, Asus Eee PC. Plenty on Ebay and they're not fetching a lot. The last batch of new unopened ones I sold on Ebay struggled to get £180. The Asus ones used to have a 2 year guarantee.
  • I got a dell mini, and it lasts me ages approx 10 hours is no problem for it . OH tells me it's to do with it not having a hard-disc, but working off solid state memory - something like that - another benefit is that it also does not get hot. No noisy fans etc. (although it can sometimes be a bit slow with some microsoft software)

remember, no matter what laptop you go for, you can extend the battery life by:
    turning down brightness/sound
switching off the wi-fi if not needed
switching off blue-tooth if not needed
only keep open programs that you are using.

The Asus EEE 901 I have has a pretty long battery life (although it's been around for a few years now), and would probably last for at least 7hrs in "auto power-saving" mode. It goes into suspend-to-RAM mode pretty quickly and wakes up in a couple of seconds, so you could extend the battery life further if you put it to sleep when you can. I got mine second-hand on eBay for £150.

Just a suggestion: if you're going to be editing files on different computers, you might want to have a look at Dropbox, which synchronises a specific directory between multiple PCs. It works on Linux and Mac OSes too.

I'd rather have a second hand laptop if I was doing a lot of typing. Bigger keyboard/screen/trackpad instead of wrecking your joints and eyes.
