wild mushrooms in my garden, please help

whilst i was hanging my washing out a few weeks ago, i noticed lots of large clusters of wild mushrooms growing all over my garden. i dug alot of them out but that left my lawn looking pathetically patchy.
A few days later i noticed they had just 'vanished'.
Then today i noticed they were back with avengance, only been on the other side of my garden, ive got a lovely new section of grass which i seeded in the summer. and low and behold large individual mushrooms sprouting from now where. ive just spent over an hour digging them out, but am worried about my two daughter who play up there (one is 6 and one is 13 months). There are still some remaining and i dont know whether to stop them from playing out there. i did a google search and read that if i put lime over them they will die. does this last forever and can i use lime juice that is available from all supermarkets, please help....thanks

Mushrooms are pretty harmless , you need to find out what type of mushroom this is... most gardeners with 'fairy rings' just keep picking them to stop the spores spreading.. as long as yours aren't actually poisonous I'd just pick them when they appear... its usually caused by wood or other matter rotting away under the soil.... Its not lime juice they are talking about its Garden Lime which you will have to be very careful using ...... you could try equal parts white vinegar and water put on where the mushrooms grow...

  • I would think that the lime might well be worse for your children then the mushrooms.

I have wild mushrooms in my garden but I will admit to eating them so it never crossed my mind to get shot of them for the way they look, but each to their own.

I would first find out what kind they are and if they are harmless ( as most are..but NOT all) then I would just remove them as they grow > pull them out.

  • The mushroom is just the fruit, the vegatable part is the mycelia that grows underground or in bark etc, you would need to get rid of the mycelia to get rid of the mushrooms.
If you pick them try and pull up as much below the mushroom base as possible, you should be able to see the thin white strands of the mycelia, this may help destroy it.

I would be a good idea to identify the mushrooms to at least be sure they are safe.

  • Can you teach your daughters to stomp on the mushrooms rather than eat them?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Many are not harmless and some are downright dangerous. The op is right to be concerned. This is a link to some amanita.
