How to stop my cat being bullied!

Options
Hi all, I'm really looking for some help on how to toughen my cat up and make him stand up for himself.

He is such a lovely wee cat and very well natured, nothing seems to bother him. So much so, that he doesn't seem to bother when the cheeky neighbourhood cats come in to the house to steal his dinner!

Last night he came home with a bloody paw and it looks like a cat bite, this is the third one in as many weeks. Last nights didn't seem as bad as the others, the first one he was limping really badly and couldn't put any weight on it and was pretty miserable. Trip to the vets and some painkillers and anti-biotics sorted him out.

Then 2 weeks ago, he came back with another bloody paw, another trip to the vets and some more medicine (£50 a time!).

I know I can't stop him from fighting the other cats (there are at least 6 others in my street alone) but is there any way I can help him to stand up for himself??

I have kept him in the house today but I feel that's unfair on him as it's as if he's being punished and he loves being outside.

Just wondered if anyone has been in a similar situation and could offer advice?

The poor wee soul just wants to play!!

Thanks for reading

  • Im sure he is lovely and sweet however he is as likely as any other cat to be the one to start turf wars as that is what Tom cats do.

The best thing would be to get rid of the cat flap for one. They are awful things that allow other cats into your home when you arent watching. You never know which cat is snuggled up during the night in your lounge.

Your cat will feel less intimidated knowing that his space is not being invaded by other cats.

Other than that other than castrating him there isnt much you can do.

thanks for your reply, we don't have a cat flap - the other cats come in through the window or doors when they are open but have just been reading about the microchip catflap which I may invest in.

it's outside where he gets into bother though, not in the house.
  • I'm having the same problem with my cat. His nemisis (Saffron lol!) likes to hang out in his turf and poor Archie is scarred stiff of her. He had a deep cut to his tummy about 6 months ago and he's always got little nicks and cuts. All I can do is chase Saffron off when I see her and hope she learns to stay away. I'm his body gaurd!

You are meant to be the protector for your cat. Not all animals defend themsevles, some are very submissive ;)

If you are continuing to have a problem remove the cat flap.

Just noticed you say it's outside most of the problems happen, well other than making your cat an indoor cat or cat proofing your garden there is nothing you can do.

  • ok, thanks for all the replies - didn't think there would be an answer!

will just try keeping him indoors when we're not at home and only letting him out when I'm home so I can try to keep an eye on him!
  • Is he neutered?

I also have this problem, fortunately the bully cat's house is now on the market so hopefully the problem will be sorted soon! My cat is bullied quite a lot, this cat was following him into the house and was making him really jumpy. I got a microchip catflap and he is so settled now and he's got his confidence back, the bully cat has got a sore head from trying to get in, my cat just sits and sniggers at him :rotfl:
