Showing the laptop screen on the TV?

We have a cable that we plug into the laptop and the tv, so we can see bbc iplayer, you tube etc on the bigger screen. For some reason it's stopped working on my profile. It bleeps when I plug it in, and it works on my OH's profile, on the laptop, but not on mine. And I can't work it out!
Any suggestions?

HDMI then not vga cable? vga cables don't bleep. Should work "out of the box" Press Fn + designated F key.
Can you restate the problem omitting "profile" putting some people off from an answer.0
