Electric central heating

Hi.

Just moved into new property and it has wet electric central heating and a storage tank for hot water

But the central heating just does the radiators and there is a one of them economy 7 control boxes for the hot water to come on at night

so i can turn the heating on and off when i want just like gas but the water is heated at night and stored.

Problem is that the electricity supply is on standard british gas pre payment with no standing charge, just a one rate metre. no discount at any point. Its eating my credit.

I want to move it on too a billing metre rather than prepayment but im not sure what would be best.

I have done some reading and have come across the following if they still exsist.

economy 7
economy 10
economy 2000 scottish power 18hrs off peak

i live in the g71 - bothwell glasgow

please help asap someone

You can contact the current supplier (hopefully it's the legacy supplier for the region, else try them too)

Most suppliers will not accept new customers onto their legacy E10 or similar tariffs
(E.On might - worth contacting them to see what exactly they could offer)

However, be aware anything other that E7 (or single rate supply as you currently appear to have) will probably cause you difficulties in trying to change supplier later (e.g. if the current supplier suddenly hikes thier rates or otherwise becomes uncompetitive)

The PPM currently installed may also be an issue for such odd-ball tariffs.

However, if you just want E7 then you can have that on a PPM (maybe needs a different one to that fitted for which a cost may apply) if a credit meter is refused.
All suppliers (well with perhaps the exception of the odd, very small supplier) support E7 and so you should be able to switch supplier later if necessary.

  • I rented a flat that had the same system and was on Economy 7 but it wasnt a pre pay meter. I was with EON. I found it to quite good once I got the hang of the timer.

Ive bought a house which has gas/elec on a pre pay meter. Many suppliers want to charge you to remove them (£300 was one quote). I dont have Economy 7 in this property.

Are you the owner? If it is rented you would have to get the landlords permisiion to swap the meter.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

You shouldn't be charged anywhere near that amount for the simple change of a PPM to a credit meter.

The typical charge (which some suppliers may not even make) is usually in the region £45 - £75, about £50 being the most typical.

Be aware that a security deposit may also be requested where a supplier grants a customer credit. This is not a charge, but a deposit that is fully refundable after 12 months plus interest (assuming the bills have been paid in full and on time)
