Skype frightening hijack

I just wanted to make you all aware of a problem that is occurring with Skype.

Today I noticed there had been 6 withdrawals from my PayPal account amounting to £69.00. The money going out to my Skype account (unauthorized by me).

I then checked my Skype account only to discover that the account was being used to repeatedly phone mobile numbers in Indonesia.

I managed to change my password and details on the account and cancel any future payments from PayPal.

From reading Skype forums it appears I was lucky many people are unable to access their Skype accounts because the hijackers have changed their passwords. alot of money is being taken from peoples accounts.

When I informed Skype of my problem they sent me an email explaining that "It seems that a third party might have gained access to your account" (possibly through a message on Skpe containing a virus) and that no refund would be made as it was my responsibility. They are not making any efforts it appears to warn Skype customers about the risk.

Had I not checked my paypal account they could have taken £100s

If this should be in a different section let me know and I will move it

On the contrary my dear Gordikins.

mtravers, it's possible that your computer is infected with viruses and/or malware. I would suggest you copy and paste (hopefully in bigger type) your post onto the Techie forum.

I'll also suggest that you download, install, update and run Malwarebytes AntiMalware from this link. Don't worry it's free and safe.

If Malwarebytes finds anything post the log along with your original post on the Techie board.

Marriage and Relationships is the right board for any thread with that title, surely? :money:

  • The reason that i have posted this is because it does not seem to matter about your protection.
I have a totally up to date kaspersky (probably the most complete protection available) and also AVG Free just to be sure.
    This is what is frightening.
On their site Kaspersky who discovered "It appears that the worm's creators are currently in the early stages of their criminal activities," said Dmitry Bestuzhev, Kaspersky Lab's Regional Expert for Latin America. "They are infecting as many machines as they can in order to get good offers from other crooks for such things as pay per install, spam and so on."
Dont suggest people of not using protection until you know the facts.(Freddie)
Gordikin. I do not usually use forums. I was merely asking if anyone new a better place to let people know about this NEW form of attack.
Coopdivi. Thanks for the advice, but Kaspersky has now sorted this virus out for me.
  • point taken OP. But even in the days of yaw and 1999, ie explorer 3 and Lloyds TSB internet banking, wher ethe PC remembered my password!, I have not been scammed. All my passwords are the same, but you have to know them and I still have not been scammed.

My virus protection is up to date and I have not been scammed.

Freda once had her card scammed by a internest site (Best Western in August 2008), but those clever guys at Mastercard sorted the poncing cockneys oyeter card out good and proper.

And again thanks for the worning, must remeber why i do not use skype, beside I thought it was free!

If you're making VOIP calls then yes. For obvious reasons you start paying when you wish to call landlines or mobiles via skype.

mtravers, having two anti-viruses installed on your computer is not a good idea. Mind you nor is having your real name as a username.

    Still you know best.
