Maybe has been asked before but is there an McAfee log file which shows what is supposed to be the trojan?

With running MBAM and the others I would have thought something would have shown up if indeed it is a trojan.

Not sure which is the flavour of the month at the moment but why don't you run a online scan just to be doubly sure.

If you can pinpoint the date you did the McAfee update which is causing the problems then have a check here on the McAfee forums.

It seems that a recent update/s (yet again!) have been causing problems.

    https://community.mcafee.com/community/home?view=discussions

I believe you said you have a subscription with McAfee, If I was in your shoes I would be tempted to make a complaint to McAfee and try and get some of your money back (doubtfull but worth trying) if the cause of the problems is due to their update/s.

Ditch McAfee (make sure to use the removal tool as well if you do), remove Ad-Aware and find another AV.
Maybe try one of the free ones from either Avira, Avast or MSE.

So does anyone know if Intel bought McAfee for $7.7bn

Maybe I should invent my own carp av suite, call it the.......

MaCaroni...kind of a moderately extended, machine-made dry noodle antivirus ;)

heya guys thanks for all the advice, I will have a look when im home from work but like you said the problems started immediately after a Mcafee update where I had to restart the laptop in order for the changes to take effect. Now I think this was around the start of August, the date the 8th sticks out in my memory so either the 8th of July or 8th of Aug but think its more likely August then July, and it was a Friday eve. I tried looking last night in the log on Macafee but it only goes back so far and there are pages and pages of 'events' logged but il try and have another look later. It said it was a Trojan virus that was found and I think its went by the name 'generic' something or other and I do remember at the time I went onto the mcafee website to look it up and did find it in their A-Z.
I also connected to a Mcafee tech assistant and he was no help at all and basically gave me an email on how to remove malware from my PC and then offered me the chance to buy their virus removal software! (the cheek of it!)

I have also stopped alot of stuff running on start up and removed various unused programs and all of the anti malware/virus scans ive recently downloaded, altho some things ive left there as I dont know what they are and on my old laptop I went abit too far trying to tidy it up and managed to delete the sound card! If you can see anything else im ok to delete let me know as I do think there are too many toolbars etc but dont know what I should or shouldnt be touching!

I cant get into quarantine to have a look at what is in there that is the problem with Mcafee, it just comes up with the page loading but never actually opens, therefore I cannot get in there to remove/delete or whatever.

I havent tried another browser as im not computer savy and didnt wanna mess about with my laptop incase I wreck it!

My brother recommended getting Kaspersky as an alternative to mcafee, anyone have any knowledge of this? good or bad?

Thanks again for all the help

If you run combofix ill advise further

  • First time on a forum. Was searching for anyone with problems with McAfee. Twice recently McAfee downloaded updates, and each time my pc would no longer start up. Had to pay someone each time to come round and sort it out - 4 hours of his time in total. 2nd time I got him to uninstall McAfee and install Avast, which is the free programme he recommended. Also have Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware (both free) installed. Am paid up to March '11 with McAfee so tried to get some of my payment back plus compensation for cost of IT bloke. Met a complete Stonewall - and consider myself quite good at arguing my case! Anyone succeeeded? McAfee must know this is happening - but obviously dont care once thay have our money.

heya guys just thought id update you, ive not got round to doing anthing more with it cause to be frank im knackered and cant be bothered at the moment! Hoping after a lie in on saturday il have more motivation to move onto the next steps re combofix etc but my brain is just not upto the challenge at the moment! As far as the "this program is not responding" problem, its still happening, but I have noticed it isnt happening as often, but it still doesnt seem completely back to its old self.

Helmacd im glad you have posted about the problems with MCafee, its seems to me then that there is definately an issue with these updates, ive googled it and have found other people on forum saying the exact same thing as us so must be something they are aware of and obviously not bothered about! And like yourself ive had no help or luck with MCafee, what a waste of money! il be sure to cancel my automatic renewal - infact im going to that now before I forget! They are not going to get another penny from me!
