Hi all,

I have both my gas and electricity with British Gas. I have been paying quarterly but now want to set up a standing order for each account to help me deal with the bills more smoothly.

Tried to call BG to get their sortcode and account number (I know my account numbers need to be the references) but they're closed.

Does anyone have BG's sortcode and account number? Do they use the same for gas and electrcity?

Thanks

I think you mean a direct debit, not a standing order?

  • I have always been in credit on both gas and electricity with British Gas. I have opened an account with a different Bank and asked BG if I could pay by standing order. They have informed me that I am not able to. They say that they are only accepting existing standing orders set up and are not allowing new ones.

Is this set in stone? I cannot get past the billing team on this one.

I don't like using D/D as the dates fluctuate when withdrawing money from my Bank accounts. I find standing orders more reliable. Also, seeing as I will always be in credit with the amount that I pay each month, I fail to understand their reluctance to accept payment in this way.

    Can anyone help?

You set up standing order payments directly with your bank.
Use the above bank details and don't forget to include your account/reference number with the payments.

  • I think I've seen message stating NPower don't accept standing orders too. Fact is they have no choice, if you send a payment to thier sort code and account numner, with your energy account as the reference, the payment WILL hit your account. It doesn't matter whether its a one off bill payment or a regular payment like a standing order.

BTW whilst I can understand your reservations about direct debit the cheapest tariffs are usually for paying by direct debit and managing the account online. You may want to reconsider in the spirit of money saving :)

This appears to be a misunderstanding on the agent's part.
Yes (as above) you can still set up SOs to make payments onto your account, and the payments will reach your account (if you have the right details)
What the agent meant was that you can no longer set up a payment plan with a Standing Order. This means that your bill is due when it arrives (or what's left of it after your payments). If your payments don't cover the bill you will get reminders until it is cleared. You also won't get a discount in the way you used to for SO payment plans.
