Transferring old laptop contents to new laptop

Can anyone advise what is the simplest and quickest way to do this without incurring huge cost?

Thanks.

  • Can I jump onto this thread and ask concerning hard drisk caddy's:
In shops I see two types of caddy cases for two types of harddrives. How would I go about picking the right one?

If both of the laptops have networking ports, can't you get a crossover networking cable and merely copy from one to another?

If you have a network router in the house, you could get both laptops connected to the network, and copy across via the network.

Regarding two types of HDD caddy - IDE and SATA - look under 'Images' in google for terms like "2.5 HDD SATA connection" or "2.5 HDD IDE connection" and this should give you pics of the two connection types. Remove the HDD from the laptop and either look at it to match to one of these pictures, or take the make and model from the label on the drive and google that to get a specification for the drive. The type will be part of this spec.

Before removing the HDD from the laptop, power it down, disconnect from any power supply, and remove the battery. Take antistatic precautions as well
