British gas wants to charge me TWICE for the same period!!

I took over the electricity and gas bills (British gas) on the 29th of December 2009 until the 7th of May 2010 when I moved out. I cancelled my accounts with BG and received my last bills a few weeks later which I paid.

However- I received a corrected electricity bill from BG today stating that I owe them another 38.76 for the period 29/12/2009-7/05/2010. The bill claim to replace my previous bill from the 12th of march (=Not the final bill!). The correct amount should therefore be £71.84 according to BG and is more than twice as much as what I’ve already paid for the same period.

So I of course phone them up and asked them why. But the guy didn’t know much of value and he had to put me on hold before he could explain that “Ehh.. It might be because the new residents have provided exact readings... Ehh.. And that’s what’s left to pay..according to the exact readings..".

(I can't post links since i just joined the forum, so I'm unfortunately not allowed to post a copy of the bill.)

But the bill that I’ve received is still based on a estimated reading! And it appears to have been made two different estimations for the same period:

“Dec 2009 - estimated 7752
07 May 2010 - estimated8125

= 373 metric units over 130 days (estimated)
373 kWh x 4.418p =£16.48

29 Dec 2009 - estimated 2361
07 May 2010 - estimated2559

= 198 metric units over 130 days (estimated)
First 178 kWh x 29.801p = £53.05
Next 20 kWh x 11.709p =£2.34”

Neither of the calculations is accurate to my previous bills;
£20.34 on the 12th of March.
£14.25 as my final bill on the 13th of May.

I unfortunately have paperless billing and BG has replaced my two previous bills with this “corrected” one so the two other bills are no longer available online. I’ve requested a copy of all of my bills (including the two that have been replaced), but I’m not sure if I’ll receive them or not. But I’ve saved a copy of all of my gas bills since I’m pretty sure that I’ll receive a corrected bill for that just as well in a few days. :(

I don’t understand it at all. What can I do about it? And why have they done this? I would like to phone them up again, but I feel pretty clueless and would like some more information before I talk with them again.

Please help.

(All heating, cooking, boiler and so on was run on gas. We only used electricity for lights, the fridge and our laptops (no TV).

What were the actual reads that you supplied on taking over the property and on leaving ? That must be an E7 bill with day and night readings. Why is E7 being used on a property that is heated by Gas ? I reckon only 1 reading was given and they have now found out it is a dual tariff meter.

Personally, if you provided an actual read upon leaving, received a "final bill" & paid it I'd write to them (don't waste your time ringing call centres) stating these facts & telling them that you therefore consider the matter closed. It's then for them to come back to you with a sensible explanation & evidence if they are claiming that the read you gave was innaccurate in some way.
