Fox Proof?

Options
Wasn't sure where to post this.
Saw a fox early this morning out in our street first time i have seen one around this area.
We keep our rabbit outdoors and bring him indoors when the cold winter starts but after seeing the fox im a little worried. I can't post links etc but we bought a large chicken coop with run attached from ebay a year ago and its done great best buy yet. It's wired all around and the doors have locks on them and at night it has a cover which has zips / velcro fastens all around.
Is a fox likely to be able to get to him still or is this fox proof enough?

Don't foxes make a habit of burrowing under fences. Just a thought. We've got a couple of foxes using our garden just about every day this year. I've assembled a fine selection of trainers, furry slippers, gardening gloves and punctured balls so far. There must be an amazing amount of stuff left out in local gardens. Earlier in the year, when they were small enough to get through the cat flap into the back porch they ate half of the blue gel inserts in my gardening shoes, then later on, the inserts disappeared completely. Weird!!
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • I would definately bring your rabbit inside to be on the safe side. Probably best in the cold months anyway.

If the fox can't get at him whilst he is in his cage I think the rabbit would have a heart attack if he saw the fox. Keep him inside and "deal" with the fox.

I agree with other members never leave animals out of a night, but also during the day you would be best to get some stakes and insert them through the netting and in to the ground, so the fox wont be able to scrab his way under..........Ive got hens but I securely locked them away every night with 2 bolts on the main outside door.

We live in the country and hardly ever see foxes, but we musnt take any chances.....safe than sorry I say.:D

A domestic rabbit having never seen a fox before wouldn't probably be pretty unfazed. My rats where unfazed by our cats although our cats would have killed them if they were let out of the cage they've never been chased by one before to know it a predator. The run its self wont be fox proof they can dig. It easy to make a Hutch fox proof. Use welded wire not chicken wire for any opening and use at two proper sliding bolts.

To make the run fox safe you need to either place some 60ishcm slabs around the entire primater of the run or bury some welded glazed wire down about 50cmish around the entire primater of the run. Does the run use chicken wire or welded wire? chicken wire is not fox proof.

Steve is spot on. Flags round the edge or wire mesh at the bottom will stop a fox digging in. It could scare a rabbit to death though so it might be an idea to buy a hutch cover so the rabbit can't see out. You could also make a wooden frame with wire mesh over it and place this across the front of the hutch at night, securely fastened. Screwfix do wire mesh panels in packs of 10.
