Student gardening help Please?

Hi everyone,

I know this is a little cheeky but I have just moved into a student house and the garden was overgrown with weeds and was in a really bad state.

I have since cleared the garden and really want to make it look more inviting and so I am going to hopefully plant some plants and shrubs.

As my money is rather short I was wondering if anyone has any advice or any seeds, plugs, cuttings that they might be willing to let me have??

I am so keen to make this garden better for us and our new neighbours!!

Thank you :)

If you ask on freecycle there will be more than enough people giving them to you. Otherwise thompson and morgan have free sets of stuff in which you just have to pay the p & p

One thing you should do before planting any shrubs is get your landlords permission in writing. I know your garden was a mass of weeds but some landlords can be funny if they find things like shrubs growing in the garden as they will use it as an excuse to keep some of your deposit on the pretence they have to rectify the garden.

If you want cuttings and the like the best thing for you do to is join your local freecycle or freegle as most of the UK sites are called - http://www.ilovefreegle.org/ Then ask on there for cuttings.

Also ask your neighbours if they have any cuttings you can have. Good way to introduce yourself to people on your street.

You need to get all your cuttings now to ensure they root by the end of the autumn.

In regards to bulbs go to somewhere like Wilkinsons or a supermarket and just buy a pack of daffodil bulbs and plant them around the garden. You should be able to get a reasonable amount for about a £5.

Whatever you don't waste money getting fancy stuff as you are unlikely to be in the house for longer than a year.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Also, scatter seeds of Nigella. It's 99% certain to come-up and makes a nice display for no real effort.
