Amazon Credit Card

Today I had my statement for my Amazon credit card. I have never had a problem with them before. I spend a small amount on it and pay in full every month. Last months bill was £17.30 so I paid in full (by cheque) on the same day and posted it off.
Today I had been credited with £14.30 and charged for not paying the minimum amount (not sure what this was but was charged £12.00 extra and also £1.00 interest).
So obviously the cheque was not correctly read and my 7 was mistaken for a 4. That is a justified mistake as far as I am concerned.
How can they justify charging me £13.00 for an under payment of £3 especially as the bill was for such a small amount.
I phoned up in a bit of a temper and the chap agreed to waive the £13.00 if I paid the £3.00 on a debit card but he was unable to take the full amount owed.
What a strange way to run a business.
I have now paid the full amount by cheque as usual and I shall not be using this credit card again.

Words should overide numbers. Did you write the correct amount in?

More importantly, why are you paying by cheque?

It's much better to have a direct debit set to pay off the total each month, this means you will never have a problem in the future.

Why shouldn't you use the Amazon card again? It gives you points and is convenient. Don't cut your nose off to spite your face.
  • You don't work for Amazon do you? I think it is a shoddy way to treat some one for £3. I know it is the computer which decides but I think they should get their software a bit more customer friendly. If I really hadn't paid or it had got lost in the post I would understand but I think it was their mistake. And yes I did write the cheque correctly.

The Amazon Card is run by MBNA, and unfortunately, this is how they do business.

The cheques are all scanned by a machine, and it is the amount in numbers not words. However, at least they have refunded the charges. The sole reason for these (and apologies if you already know) is that if the balance is less than £25, the minimum payment is automatically the full balance. Appreciate this is what you sent, but its not what they credited to your account, and again, charges are applied automatically.
No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

  • Thanks for the reply. No I didn't know about the £25 thing. I did wonder but my balance this month with charges added was something like £31.65 and the minimum payment was £28 so I couldn't work it out. I am obviously being a bit thick. Still as you say I did get the charges refunded.
I don't think I shall use the card any more (unless an emergency) in case this happens again.
To be fair I have been told before that my 7s look like 4s so I shall have to watch that.
