Open a trading account at at TD Waterhouse.Cost you about £12.50 to trade +1.5% to convert to Canadian dollars (so call it £20)

If you already have cash savings and this is your first investment then I'd suggest starting an ISA with tracker fund in it.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
As what Lokolo said, charges are cheap nowadays. Average of £10 to buy and sell + stamp duty which wouldn't be much on £500.
I could name a few companies that offer outstanding value at the current price but please don't just buy a stock on hearsay. Always do your own research and remember that shares don't go up everyday.
Good upcoming oil companies are doing well at the moment as are upcoming mining stocks.
Gulf Petroleum
Afren
African Aura Resources
Encore Oil
Enquest
Sylvania Resources
Petroneft
Circle Oil
To name just a few
p.s. Googler the OP stated for the long term so your reference to tips printed 2 weeks ago hardly stand true.
Almost 4 months and changes in share price as follows
Afren was 103p now 148p
African Aura Resources was 88p now 178p

Enquest was 121p now 144p
Sylvania Resources 49.5p now 48p
Petroneft was 46.5p now 67p
Circle Oil was 36.5p now 35p0 -
Encore Oil was 93p now 138p

Dont be put off by posters saying £500 is too little. I have just purchased £500 of shares, it cost me £1 for the trade and .5% commission. I have £1 trading charges for the first 30 days and then £6 a trade. If you are looking to buy and sell quickly with £500 i would not recommend it (unless you purchase penny shares and get lucky with a big rise, or have inside info). If you are investing £500 on a stable company with a good share yield on an accumalitive basis for the long term then your £500 will make you money.
OH and congrats on the 40% return, excellent research. Any future tips would be greatly appreciated.Mortgage overpayment01/05/11 - 31/12/2011£5000/£7000End of 2012 target£84000
