any recourse on wrongly marked reduction?

this is more a theoretical question than a serious one, because i've already bought the item and am happy with the price paid, but spotted a wrongly marked up price label when i got home.

i bought a pair of puma gk gloves from sports direct today. they were marked at being £19.99 after a reduction of 30% from £24.99. as i was on the phone at the time and was expecting to pay £25 anyway for the adidas gloves i was originally after, i was happy to pay the £19.99 and didn't pick up on the wrong markdown because i wasn't paying too much attention.

anyway, i got home, opened the packaging and realised that 30% of £25 isn't £19.99, but £17.50.

now here's my question - if i was a little more on the ball in the shop (and not having my ear bent by the mrs. on the phone), would i have been in a position to push for the full 30% off as advertised?

after reading some of the other threads, i'd like to also add that this ordeal with the wrong price has left me shaken to the very core of my being and i have already made appointments to see several top lawyers, aswell as a QC, my GP and i'm drafting a letter to the head of the european parliament to see that mike ashley and his board of crooks never see sunlight for as long as they live

I think you've covered most of the bases. However did you not have a 'child' with you too?
  • Don't think so. If they were doing it on a regular basis with deliberately obtuse numbers, trading standards might want to know, but I would think that on an individual basis, the price quoted is key.
I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!
  • The way a retail transaction works is that you take the item to a checkout and offer to purchase it. They can refuse you at the marked price without any reason or accept a lower offer if they feel so inclined.

Yes you could have offered to pay £17.50 for it and yes they could have refused to sell it to you, just as they could refuse to sell it to you at £19.99.
    Thinking critically since 1996....

While its right about the offer being accepted/rejected.......as for false advertising/misleading prices..............that would all depend whether it was marked at 30% off marked price or whether it was 30% off RRP/original price.

And of course on the assumption that they were all marked 30% off, that it happened on a regular basis (ie on purpose) and not just a few pairs by accident.

Always pays to be savvy when shopping. Special "offers" arent always good value for money. Its why i always compare price per 100ml/100g/whatever when working out which is best for my purse

I've never been assaulted...in the way in or out...unless I've insisted!
