I can't imagine it makes any difference to twins as they are born at the same time!

By first baby is means the first baby you have. Under those criteria, your partner would not be eligable as she already has a child.

The first child that a mother gives birth to in her whole life, any other child there after does not qualify.
  • ok thanks for clearing it up
  • The changes as I understand them, are not for babies born from April 2011, it's for claims made from April 2011.

    The budget document states:
From April 2011 the Government will restrict eligibility to the Sure Start Maternity Grant to the first child only.

She's due in April 2011. She can claim from 11 weeks before her expected week of confinement provided she (or you if you live together) are receiving a qualifying benefit, and she is receiving advice from a healthcare professional in regard to her pregnancy (seeing a midwife fits this).

Let's say for the sake of an example that she's due 30/4/11 - she could still claim from February 12th 2011 up to the end of March 2011 and qualify (if of course the conditions of qualifying benefit and professional advice are met at the date the claim is made). Claim anytime from April 2011, and she won't qualify.

I too found this info, however it is very unclear as to when the changes will come into effect hence why I didn't respond.

I searched high and low and couldn't find a specific piece of legislation that stated it is for babies due, or born, after April. Just that as of April 1st it would be for 1st babies only.
  • i just presume im NOT getting it so if we do its a bonus.
not that it matters just wanted to clear it up, no harm grabbing old pram out of loft,
