Changing name r.e. income support

Hello all.

My OH and I are getting married in 3 weeks.

Is it easy to change my name with income support/DLA? Do I just send them a copy of my marriage certificate or will I have to reapply for income support? My OH and I already live together and we claim income support together as I'm ill and he is my carer so our circumstances will be the same. The only difference is that we will be married.

Is there a break in payments at all? It's all a bit confusing.:o

I would say that as you are already claiming as a couple it would be a case of changing your name [by law you do not have to]. They would need to see a copy of your marrage certificate, but it shouldn't affect your claim.

Edit- congrats can't wait to see the photos on FB x

  • Write a letter advising that you have recently married and would like to change your surname on your records. Take your marriage certificate to your local jobcentre and get them to make a photocopies for DLA and IS. Ask them to stamp the photocopy as a verified true copy and send them with the letter to IS and DLA.

IS and DLA will simply enter a name change on the system. It will not affect your payments as your circumstances haven't changed, only your name has.
  • I was on IS when I got married and I just did what AsknAnswer2 said except I took my marriage certificate into the Jobcentre and they copied it and also got me to sign a declaration. There was no change in payments, I just got a letter a couple of weeks later saying that my recent change in circumstances did not affect my claim.

  • Thank you everyone. :) Sounds pretty straight forward. I'm the type that gets stressed easily so this has put my mind at rest. :)
