Yep, you can be sure they will push you towards having a hire car as that's where they make a lot of their money, did you speak to the TP company to see what their reaction was?

We havent as yet had any dealing with the TP insurance company.
I might be reading too much into your question but having seen on MSE some of the problems associated with this I would rather forgo that option as we can manage without for the time taken to repair.
We could get by even if its written off and we need to find a replacement. I need to keep it as simple as possible.
I might also be being over cautious?0
