Stockholm Accommodation

Options
Hi all

Not even sure if I on on the right board but here goes - my daughter is doing her Masters at Stockholm University, going over on 24th Sept. Although she has a few contacts and places to view she is finding it really difficult to rent some reasonable accommodation near to the university. So I just wandered if any one has any ideas, contacts, or knows of a place to rent.

Also does she need any special health insurance or will her E111 card over her.

Will be appreciative of any feed back.:

  • I know nothing about accommodation but the E111 (now EHIC) is only available to visitors to a country, not for residents.
  • Stockholm University might be a good place to ask what insurance she should get (I would imagine that some will be advisable - even if just to cover a medivac home in the unlikely event she becomes very ill - but don't know enough about the rules there to know what is needed). I'd also ask them about accomodation if she hasn't already (Stockholm can be an expensive place to be, sadly, and it may be a case of either renting a worse place or looking at at cheaper areas).
  • Leem on medical insurance - if she has applied for the special EHIC for students studying abroad rather than just the general one, then that would cover her for most things in her first year there i.e. not just emergency care as the usual card does. But I think Swedish MAs are two years usually, so she may be best investigating joining the Swedish system from the outset. I seem to remember when I visited Stockholm University seeing a campus medical centre so I would advise your daughter to get advice from the international student office there about her best course of action. Remember though only some sort of travel insurance would cover medivac costs so it might be worth getting one of those study abroad insurance policies, I know Endsleigh do them but there are other providers too.
I seem to remember seeing lots of housing adverts but I think like all Scandinavian university cities accommodation is very tight at this time of year. Has your daughter booked somewhere to stay for at least a week? All she can really do is follow up adverts (make sure she has plenty of credit on her phone) and if she's not on a budget that precludes paying agency fees, to try the agencies. Our students found this agency good: Stiftelsen Stockholms Studentbostäder - it's part-owned by the city's student unions and offers rooms in halls and in shared flats. I'm trying to remember everything students have told me in the past - I think deposits are two rather than one months rent.
Hope this helps a bit. Oh and our students who have been there found the housing search very tough, but once settled had a great time in Stockholm, so if she phones home wanting to quit in the first week or so, tell her it will be worth it.
