Saving money on haircuts

My wife has bought one of these home hair trimming jobbies, so I set about scalping the son-and-heir last night. Did a good job too, if I say so myself, and Humbug Jnr seemed happy enough with it too. Mind you, he got fed up when I kept asking him where he was going on his holidays this This looks like being a great money saving device. Here's some maths:
Device cost 17 quid from Boots (Nicky Clarke?).
Annual barber expenditure for myself and son = 80 quid per annum.
Conservative assumption that we get 3 years use out device so:
3 * 80 = 240 - 17 = 223.
So a 223 quid saving over 3 years.
Now I only need to persuade the wife and 2 daughters that a No1 on the sides and No3 on top will suit them too.....
PS Martin is always close-cropped. Anyone care to guess if he uses one of these?

I've always clipped my two boys hair, saving £5 a cut. My head is shaved with a blade every Sunday night cos by Saturday it's grown too long and is unmanagable! Cannot persuade Mrs MATH or Miss MATH to let me loose on their coifures!Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

I've cut Mr TM's hair for about 7 years or so now and have 2 boys so they get their hair cut with the clippers too. On my 2nd pair of clippers, but got a good 3 -4 years worth out of them. recently started cutting my dad's hair too.
As for me, I'm one of those beauties with the lovely flowing locks, so hands off my hair!0 -
Hubby has one of these machines and does a good job most of the time...I still need to trim where he can't see.
As for cheap cuts for girls, I used to be a model (I really can say I was a model...with my "average" face and over average sized body!). £5 for a haircut of your choice in the best salon in town...the chief chopper used to oversee what the trainees were doing and would often "tidy up" your cut at the end. The only down side was that the cut took 30 mins longer than normal as you waited for someone to come over and judge how your trainee was doing at each step. But, if you had the time, well worth it.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Yup, my hubby has been the proud owner of a "homemade" number 1 all over for the past 3 1/2 years & it's saved a fortune in haircuts. Still on my first pair of clippers (£20 from Boots IIRC) but I can tell they might not have long left. I use them about once a fortnight.
My biggest tip for cheap girlie haircuts is to get yourself to the nearest Toni & Guy Academy for the trainees to "practice on". Again, it's quite a lengthy process, but they are fully supervised, and best of all FREE. Type Toni & Guy Academy into google to find one. You can then pretend to be a hair snob & answer "Toni & Guy" to the question "Where did you get your hair cut?"0 -
Hi! This is my very first posting, so here goes! Another alternative for a cheap but good haircut, is to visit the hair & beauty department of your local college. The students are only allowed to train on jo(e) public, if they've passed NVQ level 2 minimum. Prices vary, but are generally cheaper than the high street. Certainly worth a look.0

recently started with a buzz cut for me, initially at the hair dressers (£9 yikes)
It is acceptable at work these days and makes sense given that hair is receding
One of the daughters did it last night, a number 2 all over and she did a good job, so not happy to let her do it and save the money
Unfortunately, not suitable for the girls and we have 4 of those0 -
I paid £9 for our Remington clippers from Index back in 2000, still going strong, used every 2 or 3 weeks on me and monthly on the 2 lads. The box still has the price on and it always prompts the " have we got our moneys worth yet?" comment every time !!0

OH's Nicky clarke clippers are still going strong after 8 years (just got to clean and oil the blades carefull and they last ages)
OH has blade 1 all over, DS1 has 3 on top, 1 at the side.
OH keeps looking longingly with the clippers at DS2 - he's almost 1 and has a lovely blonde mop...but I'm determined to keep one male with hair!!!:rotfl:Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. In a effort to save money we have spent about £30 on clippers only to have OH make a right pigs ear of my hair! You would think a blade #2 all over is pretty easy - yeah? No, she still messes it up and I have to do the 'yellow pages ad' bit and get a barber to rescue it.
Sometimes moneysaving does go a bit wrong.Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !0
