having been threatened with repossesion, i have put myself and two children on the housing list. I have stated the areas i would consider, being a non driver for my sons school. I have been offered two houses which where totally unsuitable. In one of the areas i stated as suitable there is an empty property but have been told it is an "adapted property". It has an walk-in shower cubicle for a disabled person and a stair lift. They have said they are waiting for a suitable person but up to now the house has been empty for six weeks.
Does anyone know how long they will leave a house empty looking for the right person and is there any way i can harras the council into seeing me as a suitable tenant bearing in mind i have been classed as "in need".

blimey lucky you!
We faced reposession 4 years ago and our council refused to even hand over an application form!
Anyway
Good luck and I wish you all the best.

Ok....so youve seen a house and thought that it would suit you quite nicely?
And even though the council have clearly told you that it is adapted for disabled........something which costs quite a bit of money......you still want it? Even though it may mean that a disabled person may end up with an unsuitable property?
Do you belong to "The World Owes Me a Favour" club?

Sorry but there are thousands of people in your situation and you just have to wait your turn. Unfortunatley the council doesnt have a stash of empty properties just sitting there in case someone needs one and the lists are endless.0

Six weeks is a very short space of time for the property to be empty.
First of all if a tenant has moved out before the end of one months notice the council will not be able to do anything (other than board the property up) until the notice has finished.
It then needs to be checked for repairs, electric/gas check etc.
It then needs to be offered to the letting department who will then see if there is anyone suitable on their list.
The process of offering the property out can take a while e.g sending out offer, waiting for person to accept/reject property.
While I think some of the responses here are a little harsh you do need to remember two things 1) there are a lot of people on the housing waiting list and many will be in a worse situation than you e.g already homeless. 2) It costs a lot of money to adapt a property and there are many people with disabilities living in unsuitable housing - this property could make a big diffrence to their lives.
I think to you also need to remember that at the moment you have a choice of where to go e.g you can turn down a property if you want. If you become homeless you will have no choice but to accept the first property they offer you and that could be worse than the ones you have been offered so far.
Could you post some more details about your current situation e.g are you being evicted from your own home or private rented? How far into the repo process are you? What type of property do you live in now and what do you 'need'?
Perhaps then someone could offer some advice about other options that may be available to you.0 -
Have you considered learning to drive? I know its expensive but the benefits are huge.
Perhaps your kids could go on the bus or share a lifft with friends. Is walking out of the question? I never had a lift to/from school. I don't know that any of my friends did either.
