Which commuting / family car

I'm going to be starting a new job soon and will be commuting 70 miles per day, mostly on dual carriage way, and would like to do that in something a bit better than my 02 Corsa 1.2 with 70,000 miles on the clock.
There's nothing too bad with the Corsa and I get a reasonable 45mpg from it when doing mostly short runs however it's getting on a bit plus we have a 1yo and fitting everything in for holidays etc.. is a chore.

I've probably got £4-5k to spend on a new car plus whatever the trade in value of the Corsa will be. I expect to get a few calls for the Focus and that's totally fine as I think that it's a good sized car and maybe some of the engines will be suitable for an economical commute but I was also looking at less 'popular' brands so that I could maybe get a bit more for my money - e.g bluetooth, better stereo, more airbags etc.. etc..

Any suggestions out there?

Cheers.

How about a mk3 mondeo diesel? Excellent fuel economy for a big car, roomy as anything, nice to drive and cheap to buy. £4-5k, according to an autotrader search I did myself today, could buy you a 55plate estate, FSH, with 70k on the clock (wouldn't worry).

  • ANother vote for the Mondeo. My next car is going to be a Mondeo TDCi.
  • Thanks for the suggestions, I'm surprised at how affordable Mondeos are now. My only concern with a bigger saloon car is that we live in an area with street parking and spaces are fairly limited most days. I expect that 75% of the time there will be space for a Mondeo but something a little smaller would also be great.
