Full 3 Wire of 3 bed semi

I have been given a quote by a sparky for my 3 bed 1963 semi
Briefly the quote comprises of:
- Rewire all exisiting sockets, fittings and level all of them to standard height
- Add approx 10 additional double sockets around house
- Move boiler switch upstairs (fuseway)
- Remove old eletric fan heaters in 2 rooms
- Fit new consumer unit
- Fit two strip lights in garage
- Remove all old un-needed fuseboxes, etc
- Fit waterproof socket outside
- Fit PIR security light front and back
- Fit shaver socket in bathroom
- Moving a couple of light switches and running a double light relay for lounge
I have been quoted approx £1700 + vat for the job with a estimated completion time of 5 days
We are based in the West Midlands
I am also considering having an alarm for the house fitted at the same time
Is the quote fair? He said if it made the difference between him getting or not getting the job he could absorb the VAT?
I've never had any work done of this size before - I just want to make sure I'm not being taken for everything!
Cheers guys/gals

Bit less than I'd be charging. Pricing depends on whether occupied during work or not and any additions to existing (more sockets/lights etc).
look here for comparisons;

The house is empty, no furniture and I have told him he can have the keys for a week as there is no problems with him coming and going when he needs too...
There are about 8 new double sockets going in and a few new double light switches. Other than that it's just a case of moving them about to the right levels and re-running new cables
I think he is going to be using MK stuff for the parts.
Does this sound reasonable then?
Thanks in advance0 -

Yes, sounds reasonable BUT this is all notifiable work under Part P of the building regulations so be sure he is registered with a Part P scheme;
http://www.competentperson.co.uk
and that you get the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) from him and a completion certificate from your local authority (he will notify them of the works via his scheme provider) to confirm the works comply with Part P. If there are any corners cut by dodgy tradesmen/cowboys then it is usually in this respect.
5 days for a rewire on an empty 3 bed semi with easy access is no problem. If you are just rewiring then you don't have to change existing socket/switch heights (or the extra ones) to met the latest regs, that's just for new builds (extensions & new properties). {unless of course you want to - but that's just extra work & un-necessary cost IMO.}0 -
He is registered with trustmark and NICEIC - I will check with him if I will get a certificate and completion document from the LA.
I will need to get the sockets, etc moved up to 'normal' heights - they are so low at the moment it's a joke - and they are all over the shop - so high, some low...
Thanks for the advice - I am getting a more detailed quote off him this weekend hopefully to ensure he will do everything I want as I want and I will probably get him to install the house alarm at the same time...
I am hoping to get everything done in one job lot - are there any recommendations you'd put on getting things in place on the fuseboard - like running a seperate boiler trip? Or anything like that?
FYI we have no electric shower - it runs off the combi boiler...
I was thinking it'd be the usual circuits like lights up/down, sockets up/down, boiler, outside lights, garage, cooker, loft electrics...
If there is anything you would suggest I make sure he does or uses then please let me know as I will mention it too him...
I basically don't mind paying a little more providing that it is done right and properly.
I bought the house with the knowledge it needed a rewire - so at least it wasn't a massive surprise!
Thanks in advance again!0 -
Sounds ridiculously cheap to me! If he is Part P, NICEIC and all that other gubbins and you can get a couple of references from him, then you've got a very good deal. I paid an awful lot more than that for a very similar job in West Yorks only a few weeks back...0

I have seen 2 other houses that they have rewired. All looks good and he is Part P and Trustmarked.
Really good then!0 -
Does the price include all the 'making good' afterwards where walls have been chased etc?

It does sound cheap to me. Hes a fool and cutting his own throat !Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
