Quick Time error code -3 ???

Hi All
I wonder if one of you wonderful poeple can help me out. I have recently acquired a new mobile phone (a Motorola V3im) which doubles as an MP3 player. To transfer music to the phone I am required to use iTunes (a CD containing the software came with the phone), but my attempts to install it onto my laptop have failed. They result in the error message:
QuickTime installation failed. Error code: -3
The installation therefore fails to complete (presumably iTunes needs QuickTime?). I have tried uninstalling QuickTime and reinstalling, but to no avail. I have tried installing with my virus checker disabled, but get the same result.
Does anyone have any suggestions/helpful hints? I'm stuck as to what to try next. Many thanks in advance!
