DS lite games onto card?

Hi
can somebody point me in the right direction please. DD has her heart set on a DS lite for christmas..fair enough...I suspect this is what Father christmas will bring her. But I have heard that there is an extra 'thing' you can get hold of to put games onto a memory card........I have no idea what this involves and suspect its not 'above board' so any pointers would be appreciated. ie is it legal/risky/not a good idea?!
