Eating Cheaply Abroad?

Afternoon all!

Havent been on for absolute years as had a lot going on lately so barely have time to get to the internet!

Me and OH are off on our holiday this weekend! Very excited!!!

However, our budgets are quite tight and we shall have around €300 for both of us for food and travel to last 7 days.

We have worked out our airport transfers and metro tickets for the week so shouldnt be too much.

Luckily we have an apartment so that we can save money on eating out in restaurants and can just buy cheap food from the supermarkets.

The problem we face is... both me and OH cant eat wheat or gluten and OH is a diabetic and needs certain amount of food to have with insulin.

Does anyone have any ideas on what food we can bulk buy to easily cook while we are away?

I'm assuming I will be able to buy the same sorts of food over there or if worse comes to worse, we may pack some rice and pasta in the suitcase to take with us (if that is allowed of course!)

By the way, we are going to Barcelona so if anyone knows of any good places to go that would be greatly appreciated! I've been before but that was before I was wheat free and without OH.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

    Hi ,

We recently went on holiday , and took dried food with us .

Packs of pasta in sauce, various packs of flavoured rice , biscuits sweet & savoury , tea ,coffee, cupa soup and pot noodles !!!!

Its quite suprising how handy they were.:j

Hope you have a great time
  • I'm not sure if you will get wheatfree pasta though plenty of rice for sale. And salads and vegetables and fruit are usually quite cheap in the markets.

I found Barcelona very expensive so £300 for the week wont last you long at all

I stayed in the Village of Sitges for the week and was paying about 23-25 euros for 3 course meal

I would expect you will be eating in most nights

  • I've just come back from Cyprus... eating out can be really expensive.... i mean for me if i'm in a hot country i tend not to get very hungry to be honest and tend to have a snack and maybe one meal per day.

Having been to Barcelona before i would say that you should try the bakeries or some of the delis a little off the beaten track as they tend to have fairly reasonable good food.

i went to Barcelona 2 years ago and we paid around £ 9.90 for 3 course meals in the city. it wasnt that expensive, mind you cities usually are, but so the competition... the same with Madrid... we ate quite well out and never thought the food was over price
Last april we went to Malaga... and again it was not expensive, 5.99 e for 3 course meal , chinese food was the same price.
In october we are going to Majorca, which i know it can be expensive.. but we will see.

i think you can not go wrong visiting the supermarket... we do this ofter although we love spain and eat out most of the time.. but our budget is usually £100 each... the most we spent is £150 each and that's with buying souvernirs and things there.

Oh well I would try and get a little loan off someone if you's can because you will defo be short on 7 nights

Me and my partner were just going out for a meal and few drinks nothing hectic and still spending 100 euro

Its not cheap abroad now, depending on where you eat and drink, you can opt for fast food joints and grubby snack bars but not much of a holiday to me

We took £1000 and that was tight for us for 7 days

each person is different but we didnt do anything OTT on the week

While eating out is expensive drinking is even more so - I don't even mean getting sloshed on cocktails, just a glass of coke or a soft drink was costing us about 3euro in Italy this summer. Coffee and wine are about the cheapest drinks so always try and take some water with you.

In Spain I save money by going to supermakets at lunch time and getting a selection of bread, cold meats, cheeses etc - and a carton of plonk for a picnic (drinkable stuff is little over a Euro). You can get a good feast for €5 a head.

Barcelona can be very expensive. Just avoid the tourist traps around Las Ramblas and the Olympic port.

40 Euros per day on two people is very very tight

If they maybe just sit in the apartment all week and do a weekly shop yeah

But if they wanting to go out and about I dont think it poss in my opinion
