Advice needed

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with advice on what, if anything can be done, if you've had your benefits stopped pending investigation.
My mother and my dad have been on benefits for a long time as he had to stop work due to illness and disability (my mother was his carer and was only doing part time retail before this). At the time he was working, he was paying into a pension which he started to receive when he had to stop working (about 300 a month), but he never declared this when he started claiming income support, disability etc. He died 3 and a half years ago leaving my mum with loads of debt and on her own. My mum started to receive half of his pension a month, which, all in all was still barely enough to make ends meet. When he died, my mum didn't declare the half pension she was receiving as she was scared that the DSS/DWP would come down on her for what my dad started.
The DWP have just found out about this so my brother declared it to the DSS on the advice of the Citizens Advice Bureau and they have stopped all of my mothers income pending investgation. She can barely make ends meet as it is and is now panicking that she will not be able to pay the rent, council tax and will end up being evicted and i'm very worried about her. Does anyone have any advice they could give on how long this could take, what will happen? Will they come down on her for what my dad started?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
