Which deposit protection schem?

I am looking for some advice. I have been renting a property out for the last 12 months using a letting agency. I am now intending to take on managing the property myself (tenant is staying, has been no problem). I have asked the agent several times who holds the deposit, have today received a four word email "its the dispute service". I contacted the dispute service intending to transfer details to my name but they inform me they don't deal with private landlords, and the agent has to request a deposit release to transfer the deposit to me and then another scheme. Not withstanding the fact it would have been helpful if the agent had told me this, I have looked at the 2 schemes available, and it seems that one is free (my deposits) and the other the DPS charges a joining and registration fee. Whilst the free service is attractive I just wondered which landlords on here would recommend, I don't want to use a free service and find its not up too much.
